The Lion is loose: This the bold new look for HSL Belgium and its Smarthybrid DE18 shunting locomotive

On 11 December 2025, HSL Belgium, in collaboration with leasing partner Nexrail, proudly unveiled a striking new livery for its Smarthybrid shunting locomotive DE18 no. 4185 202, a bold new chapter for the freight operator from Belgium, in both design and sustainability. The reveal took place at the Rail Service Net workshops in Antwerp.

Railcolor Design had the honor of transforming this locomotive from its existing Nexrail teal-and-orange corporate scheme into a powerful visual statement that truly reflects the identity of its operator. The result fuses HSL’s iconic four-line striping combined with a darker, tougher aesthetic, pairing vibrant orange accents with deep black tones. This combination symbolizes strength, professionalism, and resilience — a machine built for demanding work, operated by experienced teams in challenging environments. In short: work hard, and look the part.

Beyond its visual impact, the locomotive also represents a step forward in sustainable rail operations. Equipped with the VRS Smarthybrid battery power module, it can perform shunting operations without engaging the diesel engine, reducing emissions and noise. This innovation is highlighted through electrifying leaf graphics, underlining the move toward greener rail solutions.

And finally, every icon deserves a name. This locomotive now proudly carries one befitting its presence and power:

The Lion.

A symbol of strength, innovation, and a bold future for rail.
