PKP IC unveils locomotive honoring Polish scientist

Polish operator PKP Intercity continues to diversify its blue-grey fleet with special liveries — from promotional designs to themed wraps. The latest addition focuses on the theme of innovation and science.

A tribute to innovation and Polish science

PKP Intercity has introduced another special-liveried Griffin locomotive, this time dedicated to Professor Jan Czochralski, the Polish scientist whose work laid the foundation for modern electronics and materials engineering. The unveiling is part of a broader initiative to highlight national achievements in science and technology. Newag Griffin EU200-003 is the purple one.

Czochralski, who lived and worked in Kcynia, is best known for discovering metal B, used in the production of bearings, and for developing the silicon crystallisation method, a process that revolutionised semiconductor manufacturing. His contributions are considered as significant to modern technology as those of Edison or Tesla.

Promoting Polish scientific heritage

The new campaign builds on PKP Intercity’s long-standing cooperation with the Science. I Like It Foundation, led by science communicator Tomasz Rożek. Together, they aim to raise public awareness of Polish inventors and innovators. The foundation’s previous collaboration with the operator included a nationwide vote to select Poland’s greatest scientific minds, an initiative won by Professor Czochralski.

The locomotive, wrapped in a distinctive design featuring the professor’s portrait and visual references to his discoveries, will operate across Poland. Its introduction also coincides with the 140th anniversary of Czochralski’s birth in 2025, marking a symbolic moment to celebrate Polish scientific heritage.
