Free: Getting steamy with the first Hydrogen Mireo for Südostbayernbahn

While many regions are turning to battery powered fleets, some operators are still awaiting their new hydrogen trains. One of these is Südostbayernbahn. The DB subsidiary placed an order for three units in early 2025, with commercial service expected to begin in 2026. The complete fleet has now been spotted on trial runs at the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center:

  • 90 80 0563 012-8 D-DB + 90 80 0563 112-6 D-DB
  • 90 80 0563 013-6 D-DB + 90 80 0563 113-4 D-DB
  • 90 80 0563 014-4 D-DB + 90 80 0563 114-2 D-DB

The hydrogen units will run on the non electrified Mühldorf – Tüßling – Burghausen line, a 32.3 kilometre route that serves eight stations. To support the fleet, Deutsche Bahn plans to build an electrolysis facility in Mühldorf that will use only green electricity.

Wolfgang Scheer shared photos of the Mireos during testing, clearly showing its hydrogen powered operation with visible steam rising from the train:
